The Kurawanka style of this Chawan has been popular since the Edo Period, and has resurfaced as a favourite design in recent times. It was initially born of a practical need for a bowl that wouldn’t fall over easily on a ship, and was traditionally made of porcelain. This particular piece has been painted with a light layer of lacquer, but has exceptional heat retention properties making it especially suited to keeping your meal piping hot. The light lacquer design enables the user to be able to appreciate the grain of the wood, giving this bowl a warm homely feel.

Kawaguchi-ya Lacquerware was founded in 1946 and is the winner of multiple prefecture awards in addition to an art competition. The series we present to you is the 87.5 series which was first presented in 2015. Using traditional methods, natural wood is coated in various types of lacquer in order, boosting its resistance to water, rot, and bacteria. The name “87.5” comes from Sasaki-sans desire to put Shikoku and Kagawa Prefectures lacquerware products on the map. Kawaguchi-ya’s factory is located between the 87th and 88th stops on the 88-temple pilgrimage route.
